Summary

You receive multiple notifications and logs when sending an email while using Microsoft Outlook 2003 in cache mode.

The issue occurs because the mail branches into two messages:

  • One message goes to the /NON_IPM_SUBTREE/MDB Transport Queue folder
  • One message goes to the Sent Items folder.

The MSA scans the message twice and then generates duplicate logs and notifications.

To resolve the issue:

  1. Open the Registry Editor (regedit.exe).

Always back up the whole registry before making any modifications. Incorrect changes to the registry can cause serious system problems.
  2. To hide duplicate notification messages, add the "ExcludeNotification" registry key. Set the value to "1".

    Path: HKLM\SOFTWARE\TrendMicro\ScanMail for Exchange\CurrentVersion
    Key: ExcludeNotification
    Type: REG_DWORD
    Data value: 0 - disable, 1 - enable

  3. To specify a folder list where notifications will not be generated, add the "ExcludeNotificationFolderList" registry key. Set the value for this key as "Sent Items". If this key is not defined, it will use the "Sent Items" folder by default.

    Path: HKLM\SOFTWARE\TrendMicro\ScanMail for Exchange\CurrentVersion
    Key: ExcludeNotificationFolderList
    Type: REG_SZ
    Value: <Folder_Name_1>;<Folder_Name_2>

To specify a folder list where notifications will not be generated, add the "ExcludeNotificationFolderList" registry key. Set the value for this key as "Sent Items".

If you are using a non-English Office Outlook, it will be in a different name. You should add this name to this setting manually.

Each folder name should be separated by a semicolon (;). There should be no extra spaces before and after each folder name.

  4. To hide duplicate log entries, add the "ExcludeLogging" registry key. Set the value to "1".

    Path: HKLM\SOFTWARE\TrendMicro\ScanMail for Exchange\CurrentVersion
    Key: ExcludeLogging
    Type: REG_DWORD
    Data value: 0 - disabled, 1 - enabled

  5. To specify a folder list where logs will not be generated, add the "ExcludeLoggingFolderList" registry key. Set the value for this key as "Sent Items". If this key is not defined, it will use the "Sent Items" folder by default.

    Path: HKLM\SOFTWARE\TrendMicro\ScanMail for Exchange\CurrentVersion
    Key: ExcludeLoggingFolderList
    Type: REG_SZ
    Value: <Folder_Name_1>;<Folder_Name_2>

If you are using a non-English Office Outlook, it will be in a different name. You should add this name to this setting manually.

Each folder name should be separated by a semicolon (;). There should be no extra spaces before and after each folder name.

  6. Restart the Trend Micro Messaging Security Agent Services to apply the settings.
