Manually updating the Pattern File or Scan Engine of the Security for Mac (TMSM) client

Learn how you can manually update the Pattern File on the TMSM clients using an Official Pattern Release (OPR) or a Controlled Pattern Release (CPR).

A CPR is a pre-released version of our virus protection database. It is designed to provide you with early protection against the latest computer viruses and to serve as an emergency patch during a virus threat or outbreak.

Before performing the steps below, you need to open a Terminal window with permissions to access the pattern/scan engine folder. It can be done using any of these methods:

  • Provide the login user with access permission to the following folder:
    \Library\Application Support\TrendMicro\common\lib\vsapi\*.*
  • Open a Terminal window and run the "sudo -i" command to run the command as root.
To update the Pattern File on the TMSM client:
  1. Download the Official Pattern Release (OPR) or Controlled Pattern Release (CPR).
  2. In the Termina windowl, create a back up of the following old pattern files:
    • \Library\Application Support\TrendMicro\common\lib\vsapi\lpt$vpn.xxx
    • \Library\Application Support\TrendMicro\common\lib\vsapi\ssaptn.xxx
    • \Library\Application Support\TrendMicro\common\lib\vsapi\Ptn_Normal\lpt$vpn.xxx
    • \Library\Application Support\TrendMicro\common\lib\vsapi\Ptn_Normal\ssaptn.xxx
  3. Copy the new lpt$vpn.xxx and ssaptn.xxx to:
    • \Library\Application Support\TrendMicro\common\lib\vsapi\
    • \Library\Application Support\TrendMicro\common\lib\vsapi\Ptn_Normal\
  4. Reboot the machine.
To update the Scan Engine on the TMSM client:
  1. Download the Scan Engine or use the scan engine provided by Trend Micro Technical Support.
  2. In the Terminal, create a back up of the old scan engine:
    \Library\Application Support\TrendMicro\common\lib\vsapi\libvsapi.dylib
  3. Copy the new libvsapi.dylib file to:
    \Library\Application Support\TrendMicro\common\lib\vsapi\
  4. Reboot the machine.
