The MobileSentinel service does not appear in services.msc even if MobileSentinel.exe is available in the installation directory. Also, initial encryption does not start even if the Endpoint Encryption icon is visible in the system tray.
If you manually run MobileSentinel.exe, the following error message appears:
Cannot start service from the command line or a debugger. A Windows Service must first be installed (using installutil.exe) and then started with the ServerExplorer, Windows Services Administrative tool or the NET START command.
This issue happens because MobileSentinel is not installed on the computer.
To install MobileSentinel as a service, you need to use installutil.exe with Windows Administrative level credentials. Installutil.exe file is located in the .NET Framework folder (C:\WINDOWS\Microsoft.NET\Framework\<Latest Version>).
- Open CMD as administrator.
- Change the directory to C:\WINDOWS\Microsoft.NET\Framework\<version>. The newest version should contain InstallUtil.exe. Add the folder name after the "\Framework\".
- Type "InstallUtil.exe <location of MobileSentinel.exe>".
- After a successful installation, reboot the machine and then double-check if MobileSentinel starts in the services console.
