Specifying the update source is the first step in configuring the client deployment. You can configure clients to receive updates from the OfficeScan server, from an update agent, or from another source.

To configure networked computer update sources:

  1. Choose from the available update sources:
    • Customized update sources can include an update agent or the Trend Micro ActiveUpdate server.
    • If OfficeScan clients are unable to update from the selected update source, they will try other sources. ??

Trend Micro recommends using update agents and adding them to the Customized update source list. By configuring clients to receive updates from the agents rather than from the OfficeScan server, you can distribute the task of deploying components. This helps ensure that your clients receive component updates in a timely manner without directing a significant amount of network traffic to your OfficeScan server.
  2. If you choose to update from customized update sources, configure the customized update source list.
    1. To add an update source:
      1. Click Add.
      2. In the next page that displays, enter a range of client IP addresses that will receive updates from this source, and then select an update source such as an update agent or a specific source (using its URL).
      3. Click Save.
    2. To edit an update source:
      1. Click the IP range link.
      2. Modify the settings in the page that displays and click Save.
    3. To remove an update source from the list, mark the checkbox and click Delete.
    4. To move an update source, click the up or down arrow. ??

You may move only one source at a time.
  3. Click Notify All Clients.
The update process proceeds as follows:
    1. A client updates from the first entry on the list.
    2. If unable to update from the first entry, the client updates from the second entry, and so on.
    3. If unable to update from all entries, the client does and checks the following options:
      • Update components from the OfficeScan server if all customized sources are not available or not found. If enabled, the client updates from the OfficeScan server.
      • If the option is disabled, the client then tries connecting directly to the Trend Micro ActiveUpdate server if any of the following is true:

        For OfficeScan 10.6 and below:

        • In Networked Computers > Client Management > Settings > Privileges and Other Settings > Other Settings tab > Update Settings, the option Clients download updates from the Trend Micro ActiveUpdate Server is enabled.
        • The ActiveUpdate server (http://osce10-p.activeupdate.trendmicro.com/activeupdate) is not included in the Customized Update Source List.

        For OfficeScan 11.0:

        • In Agent > Agent Management > Settings > Privileges and Other Settings > Other Settings tab > Update Settings, the option Clients download updates from the Trend Micro ActiveUpdate Server is enabled.
        • The ActiveUpdate server (http://osce11-p.activeupdate.trendmicro.com/activeupdate) is not included in the Customized Update Source List.

        For OfficeScan XG:

        • In Agent > Agent Management > Settings > Privileges and Other Settings > Other Settings tab > Update Settings, the option Clients download updates from the Trend Micro ActiveUpdate Server is enabled.
        • The ActiveUpdate server (http://osce12-p.activeupdate.trendmicro.com/activeupdate) is not included in the Customized Update Source List.
      • Update domain settings from the OfficeScan server if all customized sources are not available or not found. If enabled, the client updates from the OfficeScan server.
      • Update client programs and hot fixes from the OfficeScan server if all customized sources are not available or not found. If enabled, the client updates from the OfficeScan server.
  4. If unable to update from all possible sources, the client quits the update process.
