Do the following:
  1. Connect to your ESX/ESXi server via Putty.
  2. After successfully connecting to an ESX host, open the command prompt.
  3. To get the VMware version, type “vmware –l” and press Enter:

    This is a sample output of the command:
    VMware ESXi 5.0.0 Update 1
    VMware ESXi 4.1.0 Update 2
  4. For the build, type “vmware –v” and press Enter:

    This is a sample output of the command:
    VMware ESXi 4.1.0 build-582267
    VMware ESXi 5.0.0 build-623860
