Error "An identical build already exists. You cannot repair the build" when installing ScanMail for Exchange (SMEX) on Exchange Server

When attempting to install SMEX on the Exchange Server, you get an error, "An identical build already exists. You cannot repair the build."

To resolve this:

  1. Request for the SMEX Cleanup Tool from Techical Support.
  2. Copy the corresponding script file for your platform to the target server.
  3. Open a Command prompt and go to the folder where the script is installed.
  4. Run the following commands to remove the traces of SMEX from your computer:

    32bit - Smex100Cleanup32.vbs /Path:[SMEXPATH]
    64bit - Smex100Cleanup64.vbs /Path:[SMEXPATH]

    where SMEXPATH = the installation directory of SMEX for Exchange.
    As an example, cscript SMEX100CleanUp32.vbs /Path:"C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\SMEX".

  5. Verify if SMEX folder still exists inside the Trend Micro folder. Manually delete it if it does.
  6. Reinstall SMEX.
