Small form-factor pluggable (SFP) is a hot-pluggable transceiver used for both telecommunication and data communication applications. It has a data speed of up to 4.25 Gbps. The form factor and electrical interface are specified by a multi-source agreement (MSA), which is an agreement between multiple manufacturers to make a product compatible across multiple vendors to ensure interoperability among different vendors. The cable used for this network device can either a fiber optic or copper.
Types of SFP transceivers:
- For multi-mode fiber:
- SX – maximum of 550 meters
- For single-mode fiber:
- LX – maximum of 10 kilometers
- EX – maximum of 40 kilometers
- ZX – maximum of 80 kilometers
- EZX – maximum of 160 kilometers
Below is a picture of an SFP SX transceiver. The different types of transceivers vary in appearance.
Below is a picture of the different cable types based on the different SFP transceivers. For example, an SX transceiver requires an SC cable; an LX transceiver requires an LC cable.
Enhanced small form-factor pluggable (SFP+) is an enhanced version of SFP. It supports data speeds of up to 16 Gbps. SFP+ introduces a direct attach for connecting two SFP+ ports without dedicated transceivers.
Deep Discovery Inspector (DDI) 4000
DDI 4000 comes with SFP+ direct attach copper. Direct attach uses a passive twin-ax cable assembly and connects directly into an SFP+ housing. The following link is an example of SFP+ direct attach copper, which includes both the transceiver and the copper cable: Intel® Ethernet SFP+ Twinaxial Cables.
If a customer prefers to use SFP+ direct attach fiber, a converter is required. For an example of the converter, check out this link: Intel® Ethernet SFP+ Optics. The customer must purchase this.
Deep Discovery Inspector (DDI) 4100
DDI 4100 comes with SFP+ direct attach fiber, which includes both the transceiver and the fiber cable.
Trend Micro DDI provides SFP+ direct attach to easily connect the DDI appliance to the customer’s environment. However, as mentioned above, different transceiver types (i.e. SX, LX etc) would require different connection cables (i.e. SC, LC etc). Depending on the customer’s environment, an appropriate transceiver and connection cables are needed. If the SFP+ direct attach that comes with the DDI appliance is not appropriate for the customer’s environment, the customer needs to purchase the corresponding items. Alternatively, there are adaptors that can be purchased to convert from one type to another. For example, there are adaptors to convert from LC to SC.
