Supported SQL Server versions in ScanMail for Exchange (SMEX) 12.0

Summary

In SMEX 12.0, a remote SQL server can be selected during installation. This document will explain detailed information on which remote SQL server to use.

 
By default, if a remote SQL server is not selected during installation, SQL Server 2014 Express Service Pack 1 will be installed in the SMEX server. SQL Server 2014 Express Service Pack 1 can only be installed on Windows 2008 R2 or above.

The following are the supported SQL server versions in SMEX 12.0:

  • SQL Server 2016
  • SQL Server 2014
  • SQL Server 2012
  • SQL Server 2008 R2
  • SQL Server 2008

SMEX 12.0 supports both SQL Server account and Windows account to access the remote SQL server during installation.

To prevent permission issues when installing SMEX, the account used for installation should have the following privileges:

ScanMail Database OptionSetup Account PrivilegesDatabase Access Account Privileges
Remote SQL Server with SQL Windows Authentication
  • Local Administrator
  • Domain User
  • Exchange Organization Management Group

Note: Activate End User Quarantine setup account should be the Domain Administrator.

dbcreator role plus the following privileges:
  • Local Administrator
  • Exchange Organization Management Group
  • Exchange Application Impersonation role

Note: Activate End User Quarantine setup account should be the Domain Administrator.

Remote SQL Server with SQL Authentication
  • Local Administrator
  • Domain User
  • Exchange Organization Management Group

Note: Activate End User Quarantine setup account should be the Domain Administrator.

dbcreator role
 
If you choose to use Remote SQL Server Windows Authentication option, it is a best practice to use same domain account for Setup Account and Database Access Account. SMEX 11.0 only supports SQL Server account to access remote SQL server during installation.
