Marketing and spam messages commonly use some random envelope sender address. This is the address used in the “Mail From” command of the SMTP protocol.
However, the message header sender address of these marketing and spam mails are not the same as the envelope sender. Message header addresses are usually simpler, more readable, and remains the same even if the envelope sender has changed. The message header sender address is the address that users see on mail clients such as Outlook.
Previously, HES only checks the envelope sender address for Approved and Blocked Sender matching. But most users would normally add the message header address to Blocked or Approved Senders list because it is the sender address visible to them. This leads to confusion and complaints.
To address this concern, the HES Sender Filter feature was enhanced. Now, HES admins can select which sender addresses HES will use as reference for Approved and Blocked Senders matching.
Additionally, the sender address shown in EUQ and Digest mails may also be configured.
To configure the HES Sender Filter feature:
-
From HES Admin UI, go to Inbound Protection > Sender Filter > Sender Filter Settings.

-
Check either Envelope addresses, Message header addresses, or both. HES will use the selected address for Approved and Blocked Senders matching.
Message header addresses in the Approved Senders list cannot bypass IP reputation-based filtering. -
To configure which addresses HES will show in EUQ console and Digest mails, go to Quarantine > End User Quarantine Console Settings.
The Admin can choose Envelope addresses, Message header addresses, or Both.

When “Both” addresses are selected in EUQ and user selects to add the sender to Approved Senders List, 2 email addresses (Envelope Sender and Message Header Sender) will be added.
This enhancement will NOT affect the following functions and features:
- Policy Matching
- Quarantine Query from HES Admin UI
- Logs Query from HES Admin UI
These features will still use and show Envelope Sender Address always.
