ScanMail for Microsoft Exchange (SMEX) 12.5 installation fails when choosing to install Microsoft SQL Server 2014 Express

Summary

When installing SMEX 12.5 and selecting SQL Server 2014 Express, the installation fails. This occurs when the target server is already running a version of Microsoft SQL Server 2012 Native Client higher than the one contained in the ScanMail installation package.

 
Microsoft SQL Server 2012 Native Client can be installed and used by third party software.

The error “Fail to setup SQL Server 2014 Express instance” occurs.

This is currently identified as an issue from SQL Server side. To address this, do the following:

  1. Uninstall Microsoft SQL Server 2012 Native Client from the server.
  2. Reinstall SMEX 12.5.
