Trend Micro Safe Lock may cause system boot failure after installing Windows 10 update

Trend Micro Safe Lock (TMSL) Windows Update Support function is incompatible with the major update for systems running Windows 10.

If you enable the Trend Micro Safe Lock application lockdown and run the Windows 10 major update, it will not be able to boot the system to Windows.

The recommended way of installing Windows 10 major update is to turn the Trend Micro Safe Lock application lockdown off before running the Windows update. Once the update is completed, renew the approved list.

If you have already tried to install the Windows update and encountered the issue, perform any of the following solutions:

Option I. Uninstall Trend Micro Safe Lock via WKSupportTool

  1. Boot into the operating system using Safe Mode.
  2. Run the WKSupportTool.exe file located under the Trend Micro Safe Lock installation folder.
  3. Use the uninstall software function to remove the Trend Micro Safe Lock.
  4. Reboot the system.

Option II. Modify the reg key to turn the application lockdown off

  1. Boot into the operating system using Safe Mode.
  2. Open the regedit and modify LockdownMode from "1" to "2" as shown in the reg key below:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\TrendMicro\SafeLock\2\WKSrv\LockdownManager

  3. Reboot the system.
