Unable to run the ScanMail for Exchange (SMEX) 12.0 Master Service after updating the agent patch

The SMEX Agent was updated from SMEX-12.0-SP1-Patch1-1727 to Patch2_1782. After the update, the Master Service was not able to start. It also stopped reporting to the Control Manager (TMCM) server.

The presence of a certain registry key "CWDIllegalInDllSearch"=dword:FFFFFFFF removes the current working directory from the library search path. It then prevents the SMEX Master Service from starting. It should be removed in any of the following situations:

  • Before installing or upgrade SMEX
  • Before installing or uninstalling a hot fix, a patch or a Service Pack
  • When SMEX crashes unexpectedly, and is unable to start automatically
