SNMP is an application-layer protocol that monitors network devices for conditions that warrant administrative attention. Items typically monitored include servers, workstations, routers, switches and hubs. You can configure the Security Management System (SMS), Intrusion Prevention System (IPS) and Threat Protection System (TPS) to be a managed by a third party SNMP server. The SNMP server periodically requests information from the SMS server or the IPS device.

You can also configure the SMS or IPS to send trap information to the SNMP server. The SNMP server is also referred to as a Network Management System (NMS) and comes in a variety of products. TippingPoint devices support both SNMP v2 and SNMP v3, which has additional security and remote configuration capabilities.

SSNMP authentication between devices consists of nothing more than a password which the system calls the “community string”. Port 162 is the default SNMP trap port. The SNMP/NMS Community String requirements are as follows:

The Community String must contain 1-31 characters. In addition any of the following characters are permitted;

  •  English uppercase characters (A - Z)
  •  English lowercase characters (a - z)
  •  Base 10 digits (0 - 9)

The following special characters are allowed;

  • @ # % ^ * ( ) - _ + = { } [ ] | : ; , !

The following special characters are NOT allowed;

  • / ` ' & \ < > ? " $
  • Carriage returns (ASCII 13)
