Summary
A condition can exist whereby an IPS is unable to properly establish link with certain devices after completing the boot process.  The symptom that this condition exhibits is that both link partners will show link lights on the interface, but packets fail to pass.  This problem arises when copper ports are manually set to a fixed speed. This problem does not typically occur when ports are configured with auto-negotiate.  Fiber ports are not susceptible to this problem.  All TOS can potentially experience this issue.

Workaround:

Enter the following command from the CLI of the IPS and then reboot the IPS:

  • debug modify ini-cfg user Drivers tptDrvRestartMacAutoneg 1

Disable the workaround with the following CLI command:
  • debug modify ini-cfg user Drivers tptDrvRestartMacAutoneg 0

Notes:

  1. A reboot will be required for the command to take effect which will disrupt traffic.
  2. This ini change does not persist across upgrades.  If you upgrade TOS, you must re-apply this command and reboot.
  3. Use of Auto-Negotiation is best practice, hard code only if auto-negotiation fails or if the link partner does not support auto-negotiation.
  4. Gigabit Ethernet is only supported with Auto-Negotiation enabled.
