When the OfficeScan agent scans a file, it references the information in the Smart Scan Agent Pattern. If it cannot determine the risk of the file using this pattern, it references the information in the Smart Scan Pattern.
Smart Scan Agent Pattern is stored locally in the OfficeScan Agent. On the other hand, Smart Scan Pattern is stored externally in the Smart Protection Sources:
- Smart Protection Network
- Smart Protection Server (can either be Integrated or Standalone)

Smart Scan Agent Pattern is updated daily and is downloaded by the OfficeScan agents’ update source (i.e. the OfficeScan server or a custom update source): Updates > Agents > Update Source.
On the other hand, Smart Scan Pattern is updated hourly and is downloaded by the Smart Protection Sources:
- Smart Protection Network
- Smart Protection Server (can either be Integrated or Standalone)

- Log on to the OfficeScan web console.
- Go to Updates > Summary.
- Get the current version of the Smart Scan Agent Pattern.
- Go to the Download Center and click All Pattern Files.
- Look for the Smart Scan Agent Pattern version and compare it with the current version.
- If the current version is outdated, go to Updates > Server > Manual Update.
- Under Components to Update, expand Antivirus and select "Smart Scan Agent Pattern".
- Click Update.
Integrated Smart Protection Server
- Log on to the OfficeScan web console.
- Go to Administration > Smart Protection > Integrated Server.
- Get the current version of the Smart Scan Pattern.
- Go to the Download Center and click All Pattern Files.
- Look for the Smart Scan Pattern version and compare it with the current version.
- If the current version is outdated, click Update Now.
Standalone Smart Protection Server
- Log on to the Smart Protection Server web console.
- Go to Updates > Pattern.
- Get the current version of the Smart Scan Pattern.
- Go to the Download Center and click All Pattern Files.
- Look for the Smart Scan Pattern version and compare it with the current version.
- If the current version is outdated, click Update Now.
