VSAPI (Virus Scan API) is Trend Micro’s File Scanning Engine, a core component of most Trend Micro Security Products. It is the current technology module responsible for processing File Objects and classifying them as malicious, suspected or non-malicious files.

There are significant improvements in VSAPI 9.0, which include: enhanced clean mechanism; enhancement of Smart Protection Network; wildcard support when specifying files and folders for scan exclusion; and support for additional file types.

In addition, several malware-related detection enhancements have been made to the latest version:

  • PDF exploits
  • Shellcode detection
  • Exploits to Microsoft Office vulnerabilities

The official release date of VSAPI 9.0 is on October 26, 2009 and the official version and build number is 9.000.1003.

Web - VSAPI 9.0 will be available for download on November 10, 2009.

ActiveUpdate - VSAPI 9.0 will be available on ActiveUpdate on the following dates:

  • October 29, 2009: (11am GMT+8) Pre-OPR for all products for APAC/China/Global
  • November 10, 2009: (1pm GMT+8) OPR for PCC, TIS/TAV, TIS PRO, Titanium for APAC and China and Web upload to all products
  • November 12, 2009: (1pm GMT+8) OPR for TMCM, OSCE, WFBS, SPNT and all products on Windows NTKD, NTKDAMD64, NTKDIA64 platform for APAC and China
  • November 17, 2009: (1pm GMT+8) OPR for TMCM, OSCE, WFBS, SPNT all products on Windows NTKD, NTKDAMD64, NTKDIA64 platform for Global

VSAPI 9.0 is available for all products.

On many occasions, Trend Micro has released minor version of VSAPI for specific platforms and products.

In this case, Trend Micro felt that the improvements are too significant that it warranted a full release for all supported products.

No. Trend Micro strongly encourages customers to upgrade to the latest version of VSAPI for each specific product and platform as soon as possible after the general release.

With the dramatic rise of malware samples and the increasing size of Trend Micro’s malware pattern file, we recommend that customers move to version 9.0 as soon as possible, especially on Windows endpoint clients.
 
Trend Micro will no longer support previous versions after the release of version 9.0. Customers calling with issues will be asked to upgrade immediately to the latest version for further assistance.

Similar to other VSAPI update, there are cases when a reboot is necessary, especially if the update is applied manually (not via ActiveUpdate).

Trend Micro always recommends upgrading to the latest version of a particular scan engine, especially if a customer has issues.

Several malware detection enhancements have also been included in the latest 9.0 release.

Consistent with Microsoft’s official support policy on these products, there operating systems are not officially supported in this release of VSAPI. The engine may or may not function on these platforms, but no official support will be offered for issues encountered on these systems.
