Summary
After successfully installing SMEX, the following services do not start:
- ScanMail for Microsoft Exchange Master Service
- ScanMail for Microsoft Exchange Remote Configuration Server
The application logs show the following errors:

Reason: ScanMail service did not start successfully.

Event ID: 12291
Description:
The description for Event ID 12291 from source Trend Micro ScanMail for Microsoft Exchange cannot be found. Either the component that raises this event is not installed on your local computer or the installation is corrupted. You can install or repair the component on the local computer.
The transport scan module is unable to detect ScanMail or it does not have proper permission to access ScanMail related files or registries. ScanMail Master Service is not started. Please restart ScanMail Master Service.
To resolve this issue, change the SMEX installation folder property (e.g. C:\Program Files\Trend Micro).
- Select the Allow files in this folder to have contents indexed in addition to file properties option and leave the other properties unselected.
- Go to C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\Smex\engine\Emanager and delete Vsapi*.dll file.
- Start the SMEX Master Service.
