* Technically, an earlier Critical Patch (b1326) resolves this specific vulnerability, however, the application of the newer Patch 2 is highly recommended since several other issues are resolved in this build and includes the vulnerability fixes mentioned in this bulletin.

Customers are encouraged to visit Trend Micro’s Download Center to obtain any necessary prerequisite software before applying any of the solutions above.

Vulnerability Details

This update resolves a specific vulnerability in Trend Micro Mobile Security (Enterprise) 9.7 in which Android devices do not validate SSL certificates it receives when connecting to specific sites. This could potentially allow an attacker to perform a man in the middle (MITM) attack and present a bogus SSL certificate, which would be silently accepted.

Please note that an updated build of the client Android APK has already been uploaded to Google Play as well.

As with any vulnerability, customers are highly encouraged to update to the latest build as soon as possible.

Mitigating Factors

In addition to timely application of patches and updated solutions, customers are also advised to review remote access to critical systems and ensure policies and perimeter security is up-to-date.

However, even though an exploit may require several specific conditions to be met, Trend Micro strongly encourages customers to update to the latest builds as soon as possible.
