Since its original release in October 2009, Microsoft Windows 7 has been and continues to be utilized extensively by both corporate and consumer users around the world. Even though it has officially reached End-of-Support (EOS) status, it remains a popular operating system (OS) even today - especially in corporate environments.

Mainline technical support and security updates for Windows 7 ended on January 14, 2020, after ten (10) years. For select organizations, Microsoft offered an Extended Security Update (ESU) for Windows 7 that is slated to end on January 10, 2023.
In line with the end of the Microsoft ESU program, the following Trend Micro Business Endpoint Products will officially reach End of Support (EOS) for the Windows 7 platform as well. The primary reasons for this are twofold:

  1. Many threats in the wild exploit vulnerabilities that are at the OS level. While security endpoint products can provide some protection, the underlying vulnerabilities should (must) be addressed, and since Microsoft will no longer provide security updates for this platform could leave endpoints vulnerable even with updated security software.
  2. With Microsoft no longer providing development support on the OS, it becomes increasingly more difficult for Trend Micro to ensure compatibility or resolve bugs with newer features in our products with the legacy OS. This can limit the new features and advanced functionality for current versions of the OS.

Due to this, Trend Micro strongly recommends that users migrate to the latest supported OS version as soon as possible.

What happens if a customer submits a support request or threat inquiry on a Windows 7 endpoint client after the official EOS date?

Trend Micro frontline technical support in some cases may try and provide some best-effort support for clients on this platform if possible for a period of time. However, please note that any issue that would require development escalation or creation of new detections specifically for this platform will be not be accepted after the official EOS date. Trend Micro strongly encourages customers who have not yet migrated from the Windows 7 platform to do so as soon as possible.
