Purpose: Bypass I/O Modules (BIOMs) combine the segment interfaces with mechanical bypass switches for high-availability purposes. TippingPoint modules are available with either long-range or short-range transceivers. The BIOMs can route traffic within the module when the device loses power or when the module is removed from the device.

Optical Reach & Loss Description

The following diagram describes the additional optical loss induced by the HW on the 40GBase- SR4/LR4 IOMs. The MSA and IEEE specify the maximum optical loss from one customer I/O port to another in the form of dB or physical distance. This specification assumes that the "port" is the physical transceiver connection the customer plugs into directly. But, in the case of a ZPHA capable of bypassing IOM on TippingPoint TPS products, the customer "port" is not a direct transceiver connection. Instead, there is an internal embedded optical switch between the customer "port" and the QSFP+ transceiver (also embedded inside the module). The following block diagrams describe this additional optical power loss induced by the additional components in the path between the embedded QSFP+ transceiver and the customer I/O port. This additional optical loss may have to be taken into account in the customer's cabling infrastructure.

In addition to the optical loss induced by the additional components in the Bypass IOM, this diagram also describes the difference between a normal port-to-port optical reach as defined by the MSA and IEEE and the optical reach as defined by the TPS products for the case of the ZPHA Bypass Mode. The MSA and IEEE specify the optical reach from transceiver to transceiver. With the TippingPoint TPS product between the two customer's connections, the TPS fully supports the optical reach specified by the MSA and IEEE when the TPS device is in the normal (non-bypass) mode. In this case, the embedded QSFP+ transceivers are alive and transmitting and receiving traffic. But, in the case of ZPHA Bypass mode, the embedded transceivers are off, and the optical switch connects TPS ports A and B directly together. This bypasses the TPS device and presents a direct connection from one device directly to the other device from the customer's point of view. This is a purely passive connection, so it is seen as a direct optical link between the customer's two pieces of equipment. Therefore, to account for the ZPHA Bypass mode, the TPS product specifies an optical reach of 1/2 of that specified by the MSA and IEEE. This guarantees that the bypass link (direct link between the customer's two pieces of equipment) is within the optical reach specified by the MSA and IEEE.
