Attaching and Detaching Throughput Licensing for TippingPoint TPS Using TMC and License Manager

This article outlines the process for attaching and detaching throughput licenses for Trend Micro TippingPoint Threat Protection System (TPS) devices using the Threat Management Center (TMC) and the TippingPoint License Manager (TLM).

Overview

• The License Manager (TLM) is accessed via the TMC portal and provides centralized control for attaching and detaching speed and feature licenses for TPS devices.
• Throughput licenses determine the maximum inspection speed for each TPS device. By default, devices operate at a reduced throughput until a license is attached.
• License package can be managed via the Security Management System (SMS).

Attaching a Throughput License

1. Log in to the TMC portal and navigate to My Account > License Manager.
   (You must have TLM access enabled on your account. Contact TippingPoint TAC support for assistance.)
2. Locate your TPS device in the License Manager dashboard.
3. Select the desired throughput license entitlement from your available licenses.
4. Attach the license to your device by following the on-screen prompts. The system will generate a new license package for your device.
   The License Manager screen provides all the license information for your devices, including inspection throughput and activated features.
5. Apply the license package to your device:
   • If using TMC: The license package will be automatically downloaded to the SMS and distributed to the device.
   • If using SMS: Manually upload the license package via the Security Management System (SMS).
6. Reboot the TPS device to activate the new throughput capability.
7. Verify the license status on the device to ensure the purchased throughput is enabled.

Detaching a Throughput License

1. Access the License Manager via the TMC portal.
2. Locate the TPS device with the attached throughput license.
3. Select the option to detach (remove) the throughput license from the device.
   This returns the license entitlement to your available pool and the device will revert to its default (reduced) throughput.
4. Apply the updated license package to the device:
   • If using TMC: The updated package is pushed automatically. (May take up to 30 minutes)
   • If using SMS: Manually upload the new license package to the SMS for immediate effect.
5. Reboot the TPS device for the changes to take effect.
6. Confirm that the device is now operating at its default throughput or with any remaining attached licenses.

Troubleshooting Tips

• If the device shows a transitional license or does not enable the purchased capability, ensure the license package has been correctly attached and applied.
• Check the device system log for license status messages (e.g., TOSPORT-INFO: LIC: License: Using the transitional license).
• For license status errors, log in to your TMC account and check for updates to your license entitlement package.
