Chrome and Edge prioritize handling the ExtensionInstallForcelist through the HKLM registry over the HKCU registry. If a user has their extension managed through HKLM, enabling Trend Vision One™ "Browser Extension" will prevent the "Trend Micro Toolbar for Enterprise" browser extension from being installed and loaded by Chrome/Edge. This occurs because the extension is installed through the lower priority HKCU registry key.

Registry Keys Involved

  • HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Google\Chrome\ExtensionInstallForcelist
  • HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Edge\ExtensionInstallForcelist

If these registry keys are configured on a user's computer, the "Trend Micro Toolbar for Enterprise" will not be installed or loaded by the Chrome/Edge browser.

Mitigation

To ensure the "Trend Micro Toolbar for Enterprise" is successfully installed through the ExtensionInstallForcelist, users can use one of the following mitigation plans:

  1. Remove the ExtensionInstallForcelist registry key through HKLM.
  2. Copy the ExtensionInstallForcelist registry key value from HKCU to HKLM and manually remove the registry key through HKLM if no longer needed.

Examples

Chrome:

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Policies\Google\Chrome\ExtensionInstallForcelist]
"1000"="iiipkionnkhdcficbbpionjlfmnjgnlg;https://clients2.google.com/service/update2/crx"

Edge:
