One-click upgrade failure for AWS Marketplace Deep Security Manager (DSM) 12.5.985 when Product Usage Data Collection is disabled

Summary

When using the AWS Marketplace version of DSM 12.5.985 with the Product Usage Data Collection option disabled, the one-click upgrade of DSM may fail.

You may see the following messages in the server0.log file (/opt/dsm/server0.log):

java.lang.NullPointerException
        at com.trendmicro.ds.dstelemetry.prism.DSTelemetryPrism.publishNow(DSTelemetryPrism.java:156)

To continue to use one-click upgrade:

  1. Enable Product Usage Data Collection. You can do this using the GUI or command line:
    • GUI: Log in to the DSM console and go to Administration > System Settings > Advanced > Product Usage Data Collection. Select "Enable Product Usage Data Collection" and click Save.
    • Command line: Go to the DSM Installation folder and run the command:

      dsm_c -action changesetting -name settings.configuration.enableTelemetryService -value true

  2. If you are running a multi-node DSM, go to Administration > Manager Nodes and check the nodes:
    • If you see nodes that have already been upgraded and have the status "offline", use SSH to log in to the instance and use this command to restart the DSM service:

      service dsm_s restart

      The one-click upgrade should continue again in the background.

    • If no nodes are upgraded and they are all online, trigger the one-click upgrade again.
