Increasing the limit of messages that can be released from quarantine in ScanMail for Exchange

Summary

If you have a large number of messages to be released from quarantine in ScanMail for Exchange (SMEX), you might be restricted to release around 90 to 100 messages at a time. This occurs even though you selected up to the maximum of 999 messages.

It happens because the request URL exceeds the Maximum query string setting in IIS, which is 2048 characters.

This fix works for Firefox, Chrome, and Microsoft Edge browsers. As Internet Explorer truncates the URI to 2083 characters, it will still only resend about 100 messages.

To increase the limit, modify the setting via IIS Manager.

  1. On each SMEX server, open the Control Panel.
  2. Navigate to Administrative Tools > IIS Manager.
  3. Browse to SMEX Web Site.
  4. Double-click Request Filtering, then click Edit Feature Settings... link on the right side.
  5. Increase the value of Maximum query string (Bytes) field to "20480".
  6. Leave all other parameters at their default values.

The new setting would take effect immediately, allowing you to release up to 999 messages from quarantine at a time.
