Manually updating the ScanMail for Exchange (SMEX) Virus patterns and Engine

Summary
In situations where the administrator is unable to update the SMEX pattern files using the ActiveUpdate process, the SMEX pattern files can be updated manually.

The latest pattern files can be found on the Trend Micro Download Center here.
There are many patterns, the ones that relate to SMEX are:
 
Conventional Enterprise OPR - lpt***.zip
Smart Scan Agent Pattern - icrc$oth.zip
Spyware Pattern - ssaptn***.zip

Click the download icon next to each of the above patterns to be redirected to the Download Center, where you can get the pattern file.
  1. Stop the ScanMail services:
    • ScanMail for Microsoft Exchange Master Service
    • ScanMail for Microsoft Exchange Remote Configuration Server
  2. Back-up and replace lpt$vpn.xxx, icrc$oth.xxx and ssaptn.xxx with the latest pattern files that was downloaded to the following directories:
    • ..Trend Micro\smex\engine\vsapi\latest\pattern
    • ..Trend Micro\smex\engine\vsapi\primary\pattern
    • ..Trend Micro\smex\engine\vsapi\secondary\pattern
  3. Restart the following services:
    • SMEX Master Service
    • ScanMail for Microsoft Exchange Remote Configuration Server
  4. Open the SMEX management console and verify that it is using the latest pattern file.

For SMEX download the Windows 64-bit pattern:

In the downloaded zip file there will be a vsapi64.dll file
The version of the file can be checked on the Details tab of the file properties, and compared to the existing file:

If the downloaded file is a newer version, follow the same procedure as for the pattern files to update:
  1. Stop the ScanMail services:
    • ScanMail for Microsoft Exchange Master Service
    • ScanMail for Microsoft Exchange Remote Configuration Server
  2. Back-up and replace the vsapi64.dll file with the newly downloaded version in the following directories:
    • ..Trend Micro\smex\engine\vsapi\latest\pattern
    • ..Trend Micro\smex\engine\vsapi\primary\pattern
    • ..Trend Micro\smex\engine\vsapi\secondary\pattern
  3. Restart the following services:
    • SMEX Master Service
    • ScanMail for Microsoft Exchange Remote Configuration Server
  4. Open the SMEX management console and verify that it is using the latest engine file.
