Know the possibility to install IMSS and IWSS on the same box.
Trend Micro does not recommend configuring IMSS and IWSS on the same box. This setup is common for customers migrating from the older ISUX products where HTTP, FTP, and SMTP scanning were done on the same box.
If you decide to install both products on the same box, they will still work. However, standalone products have undergone several modifications and tested to work best when deployed on a separate box.
If you want to deploy this method, take note of the following:
Performance issues
IWSS itself will already consume most of the server resources when processing HTTP and FTP traffic. Assess the number of request it gets in a day and the server specification to measure if it can also handle the SMTP traffic from IMSS.
If IWSS and IMSS were purchased not for performance but for functionality, then deploying them on one server should not be a concern.
Trend Micro Infrastructure (TMI) issues
When two Trend Micro products are installed on the same machine, they must share one (1) TMI. During installation, the product detects the presence of TMI and if it is already installed, a new product just registers itself in the existing TMI and does not install a new one.
This causes the following:
- Stopping IMSS also stops TMI and IWSS TMCM Agent.
- Stopping the IWSS TMCM Agent also stops TMI and IMSS Agent. It also disables the web-based administration of IMSS.
- Uninstalling IWSS or IMSS from the machine will have the risk of damaging the other product installed since they share the same TMI.
