Bypassing scan engine error codes in InterScan Messaging Security Suite (IMSS) or InterScan Messaging Security Virtual Appliance (IMSVA)

Summary

When the scan engine considers your legitimate files to have issues, scan engine returns error code in the log. Below are some examples:

  • 2008/09/04 16:26:11 GMT+01:00 [3768:3244] An error occurred while virus scan upon message '20986D5B-8143-46FF-B8FA-34407B9194F7'. Error: -82 'BAD_ZIP_ERR'
  • 2014/06/02 16:19:40 GMT+02:00 [15210:4124161744] [NORMAL]An error occured while virus scan upon entity 4 of message file 'E8B50F5B-FADB-1504-A294-50100CC32473'. Error: -76 'EXTRACT_TOO_BIG_ERR'

To bypass the error code, skip the scan session:

 
Skipping scan session creates potential security risk.
  1. For IMSS, open the imss.ini file located in the {IMSS_Installation_folder}\config folder.
    For IMSVA, open /opt/trend/imss/config/imss.ini.
  2. Go to the [virus] section. If the section does not exist, manually add it.
  3. Add the key listed in the table below that corresponds to the error you want to skip.

  4. Set the value of the key to "1".
    For example:
    [virus]
    VSBIgnBadZipErr=1
    VSBIgnExtractTooBigErr=1
  5. Save and close the imss.ini file.
  6. Restart the Trend Micro IMSS Services.
