“Your CPU does not support long mode.” appears when installing a virtual appliance in a VMware ESX server

You receive the following error message when installing a virtual appliance on top of VMware:

Your CPU does not support long mode.

This information points to the ESX side.

This issue occurs if the VT option in the BIOS of the ESX server is not enabled. However, if the option has been enabled but you are still encountering the issue, check if the ESX is a standard machine that is on the hardware check list (HCL).

The Paravirtualization should not be enabled for the guest, since it is only supported for 32-bit guests.
