Summary
This article lists down the files and folders that should not be included for scanning by OfficeScan, ServerProtect for Windows (SPNT), and others. This is to prevent performance issues and ensure efficiency in file scanning while still providing the necessary protection on the host Exchange/SMEX machine.
On the SMEX side, nothing will be changed since by default it would still be scanning both inbound and outbound email messages as processed by Microsoft Exchange Server.

Here are the files and folders that should not be scanned:
Below are some pointers that you need take note of:
  • The action "Archive" is changed to "Backup" and the default Quarantine & Archive folder is also changed. To exclude archive directory in SMEX 8.0, you need to exclude "backup for contents filter" instead of "archive" in SMEX 10.
  • When enabling debug log for a long time, it may be better to exclude "SMEX\debug" to avoid i/o scanning for debug logs. In normal operation, you do not need to exclude it because debug logs are not created.
  • Exclude "SMEX\SharedResPool" because this folder stores memory mapped files to share message object between Exchange and SMEX. If i/o scanning products quarantine or block memory mapped files, then SMEX cannot scan objects in the Exchange server.
