Summary
SMEX blocks Office 2007 files, such as XLSX and PPTX, and shows the following message:
over restriction (decompressed file size)
This article details how to configure SMEX to scan these files correctly and not block the messages.
Details

Office 2007 files use a new format that incorporates compression. This can reduce the file size to up to 75%.
For example, a 10MB Office 2007 file may contain thousands of files and can decompress to over 60MB.
Sometimes, these Office 2007 files are blocked by SMEX because they violate the settings found under Virus Scan > Scan Restriction Criteria.
To confirm the decompress file size and number of files that an Office 2007 file contains, please do the following:
  1. Open a decompression program, such as WinZip or WinRar.
  2. Open the Office 2007 file that is having an issue. The file contents will appear.
  3. Extract the contents of the Office 2007 file to a folder.
  4. Right-click the folder where the files were extracted to and then select Properties.
  5. The information will include decompress file size, and the number of files and folders.
To have SMEX scan these files, you may need to increase the settings in the Scan Restriction Criteria page.
  1. Log on to the SMEX management console.
  2. Go to Virus Scan > Target tab > Scan Restriction Criteria.
  3. Increase the number, if needed, for:
    • Decompressed file count exceeds
    • Size of decompressed file exceeds
