This article answers common questions about Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI) in OfficeScan. In OfficesScan 11.0, this is known as Virtual Desktop Support.
How do I deploy the Golden Image via Xen or vCenter, Hyper-V?
After preparing the golden image, deploy it to the environment in a manner similar to deploying virtual machines.
To utilize Virtual Desktop Support features, follow the steps in this KB article: Configuring the OfficeScan Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI) client.
Is it possible to update offline images?
Offline image means that guest VM machines on the VMware vCenter Server or Citrix XenServer, Hyper-V are off or have a suspended status. The VDI client is not running, and therefore, the image will not update.
How long will it take for an offline image to update once it goes online?
An image that just went online will update depending on the On-Demand scan VDI setting from the OfficeScan server.
What is the best practice for VDI client usage?
Refer to this KB article: Best practice for setting up Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI) in OfficeScan 10 SP1/10.5/10.6.
What platforms are not supported by this version of VDI client?
That depends on both OfficeScan system requirements & VDI’s system requirement.
What is the recommendation given that there is no way to track which are VDI and non-VDI clients?
As of this writing, there is no way to distinguish a VDI client from a normal client via the OfficeScan console. It is recommended to search "VDIEnabled" on the following registry path on the OfficeScan client machine:
Type : REG_DWORD
What will be the error if we run the TCacheGen.exe tool on a VMWare image that is not managed by Xen or vCenter, Hyper-V configured from the OfficeScan server?
There is no error if you run the tool on a VMWare image that is not managed by VCenter configured from the OfficeScan server.
How can VDI clients connect to a virtualization application (Xen or vCenter, Hyper-V)?
VDI clients synchronize with a virtualization application via OfficeScan server with Trend Micro Virtual Desktop Support enabled.
Here is how the VDI clients can connect to a VCenter:
- Log on to the OfficeScan console.
- Go to Plug-in Manager > Virtual Desktop Infrastructure Settings.
- Select one of the Virtual Desktop Management methods.
- Tick the Enable this connection check box.
- Enter the credentials.
- Click Save.
What will happen if the TCacheGen.exe tool is deployed without registering the VCenter?
Trend Micro Virtual Desktop Support will work on the guest VM machines that are on the VMware vCenter Server or Citrix XenServer, Microsoft Hyper-V, but not on the physical machine.
How does whitelisting work in TCacheGen.exe? Does it whitelist all files and folders from the Golden image?
We only certify the contents of the image that most administrators use as a base when creating new virtual desktops, but we do not whitelist all the files and folders. The whitelist will not be removed if we deploy this Golden Image.
The reason why we certify these contents is to reduce time and effort during client installation for virtual desktops. Certifying the image ensures that OfficeScan will scan only the changes made to the image to render less scan time.
Is there a file created for the whitelist feature for TCacheGen.exe?
Yes, the TCache.bin file is created.
Is VMware View 5.0/Vsphere 5.0 supported in OfficeScan VDI Plug-in?
VMware View 5.0 and Vsphere 5.0 are supported in OfficeScan 10.5 and 10.6. Refer to the OfficeScan System Requirements for more information about supported VMware.
