EventID 18456 appears when rolling the Exchange Cluster from one node to another in ScanMail for Exchange (SMEX)

The error appears on Microsoft Exchange Server 2007 Single Copy Cluster (SCC). As a result, the SMEX Master Service occasionally fails to restart and users receive the following errors:

The following also appears in the SMEX Master debug log:

To resolve this issue, you need to remove the dependency between ScanMail Master Service and MSSQL$SCANMAIL.

Please do the following:

Note: This feature is only applicable to Exchange Server 2007 Single Copy Cluster (SCC).

  1. Open the service control manager (SCM) and stop all the ScanMail-related services.
      ScanMail for Microsoft Exchange Master Service
    • ScanMail for Microsoft Exchange Remote Configuration Server
    • ScanMail for Microsoft Exchange System Watcher
    • SQL Server (SCANMAIL)
    • Open the Registry Editor.
       
      Always back up the whole registry before making any modifications. Incorrect changes to the registry can cause serious system problems.
    • Add the following registry value:

      Path: HKLM\SOFTWARE\TrendMicro\ScanMail for Exchange\CurrentVersion
      Key: RestartSQLServiceWhenResourceOnline
      Type: REG_DWORD
      Data value: 1

    • Close the Registry Editor.
    • Remove the dependency between ScanMail Master Service and MSSQL$SCANMAIL.
      1. Open a command prompt (cmd.exe).
      2. Type the following command:

        sc config ScanMail_Master depend= ""

      3. Start all the ScanMail-related services.
        • ScanMail for Microsoft Exchange Master Service
        • ScanMail for Microsoft Exchange Remote Configuration Server
        • ScanMail for Microsoft Exchange System Watcher
        • SQL Server (SCANMAIL)
    • Restart all the ScanMail-related services for the changes to take effect.
