ScanMail for Exchange (SMEX) services are not starting on the Client Access Server/Hub Transport Server

Summary
After successfully installing ScanMail for Exchange on an Exchange 2010 Client Access Server/Hub Transport Server (CAS/HT) role, the following services could not be started:
  • ScanMail for Microsoft Exchange Master Service
  • ScanMail for Microsoft Exchange Remote Configuration Server
Trying to manually start the services generates similar to the following error in the event logs:

To resolve this issue, change the SMEX installation folder property.
For example: C:\Program Files\Trend Micro
  1. Select the Allow files in this folder to have contents indexed in addition to file properties option.
  2. Leave the other properties unselected.
If you installed successfully, then start the services. Otherwise, perform another installation.
