“Unable to install Full Disk Encryption. Please try again” appears when installing Full Disk Encryption (FDE)

You receive the following error message when installing Full Disk Encryption (FDE):
Unable to install Full Disk Encryption. Please try again.
When installing using the command prompt, you receive the following error message:
TCG initialization failed

The issue happens because the hard drive on the system is an FDE or Self-Encrypting Device (SED) and not a Seagate drive.
FDE only supports the following SEDs:
  • Seagate DriveTrust drives
  • Seagate OPAL and OPAL 2 drives
If you check the PreInstallCheckReport.txt file, an SED is detected:
Name: SED hardware compatibility
Description: Checks that the Machine has SED hardware compatibility
Status: Pass
As a workaround, do the following:
  1. Open a command prompt.
  2. Go to the directory where tmfdeinstall.exe is located.
    Example:
    If the installer package is under the c:\installation\TMEE folder, run the following command:
    cd c:\installation\TMEE
  3. Run the following command:
    tmfdeinstall.exe forcesoftware
    The “forcesoftware” command allows you to install the software in Software Encryption mode. The supported Seagate SED drive follows the prompt to finish the FDE installation and it is installed in hardware encryption mode.
    When you use the “forcesoftware” command, it ignores any SED configuration and forces Software Encryption regardless of the hardware type.
