Cloud Pre-Filter unable to reject mails sent to invalid recipients of InterScan Messaging Virtual Appliance (IMSVA)

Summary
IMSVA Cloud Pre-Filter does not reject mails sent to invalid recipients even if the Enable Valid Recipient check option has been selected. Due to this, IMSVA receives mails from invalid recipients that the Cloud Pre-Filter service is supposed to block.
For reference, these are the steps to enable the Enable Valid Recipient check option:
  1. Go to Cloud Pre-Filter.
  2. Select a domain name from the list.
  3. Click the Conditions tab.
  4. Tick Enable Valid Recipient check.

Mails are not rejected because your domain has a secondary MX record pointing to the IMSVA server and some spammers may be sending mails to this server instead of the primary MX record.
For example, your MX records show:
<yourdomain>.com MX preference = 10, mail exchanger = <IMSVA_FQDN_or_IP>
<yourdomain>.com MX preference = 5, mail exchanger = <PrefilterInBoundMTA_FQDN>
All Internet mail senders are supposed to send mails to the primary MX record <PrefilterInBoundMTA_FQDN>, which has the smallest reference number. But some spammers directly send mails to the secondary MX record <IMSVA_FQDN_or_IP>. And in return, these mails will bypass Cloud Pre-Filter service and all of its features will not work.
To resolve the issue, enable the Reject unknown recipients option in IMSVA:
  1. Go to Administration > IMSVA Configuration > SMTP Routing > Message Rule.
  2. Select Reject unknown recipients.
  3. Save the changes.
By doing the steps above, the unknown recipients’ addresses will be invalid and mails sent either to the Pre-Filter inbound MTA or to IMSVA will be blocked.
