System Watcher large memory consumption in ScanMail for Exchange (SMEX)

    • Updated:
    • 1 Dec 2020
    • Product/Version:
    • ScanMail for Exchange 11.All
    • Platform:
    • Windows 2012 Server Essentials
Summary

The SMEX_SystemWatcher process is consuming a significantly large amount of memory. This is caused by the swExchangeMonitor.dll file. When this DLL file is deleted, the System Watcher process will not monitor exchange store and not call MAPI API either, such as API used to open API.

The swExchangeMonitor.dll file is for monitoring purposes. It uses Microsoft cmdlets like "Get-MailboxDatabase -Server,Get-TransportServer -Identity" to perform the following functions:

  • Monitor the SMTP queue size
  • Monitor mail store size
  • Monitor size of disk which stores the transaction log
This issue has been fixed in SMEX 12.5 SP1 by adding a cache mechanism to store Exchange information gotten from Exchange cmdlets to avoid calling Exchange cmdlets frequently.
