Editing configuration files of Linux-based products

You want to know how to edit configuration files of Linux based products directly on the Linux machine by using the command line.

To modify the configuration files:

  1. Log on to the Linux machine as "root" with a SSH client such as PuTTy.
  2. Make a backup of the configuration file you would like to edit in /var/tmp with the command "cp".

    For example:
    # cp /etc/iscan/intscan.ini /var/tmp

  3. Edit the file with vim:

    1. Open the file in vim with the command "vim".

      For example:
      #vim /etc/iscan/intscan.ini

    2. Type "/" and then the name of the value you would like to edit and press Enter to search for the value in the file.

      If more than on instance of the search string was found you can use "n" to go to the next instance or "?" to go to the previous one.
    3. Type "i" to enter insert mode.
    4. Modify the value that you would like to change using the arrow keys on your keyboard.

    5. Press ESC and then type ":wq!" then press Enter to save the changes and exit vim.

       
      If you would like to exit the file without making any changes press ESC, then type ":q!" and press Enter.
