Size inconsistency between InterScan Messaging Security Virtual Appliance (IMSVA) web interface and the actual disk size usage

    • Updated:
    • 25 Oct 2017
    • Product/Version:
    • InterScan Messaging Security Virtual Appliance 9.0
    • InterScan Messaging Security Virtual Appliance 9.1
    • Platform:
    • N/A N/A
Summary

The IMSVA administrator receives notification mails with either of the following content:

Over 90% of your quarantine area has been used. Expand your quarantine area or release old email messages for more space.

Over 90% of archive area has been used. Expand your archive area or release old email messages for more space.

However, the sum of the message size shown in the web UI doesn't exceed 90% of the quarantine/archive area size.

The sum of the message size is NOT calculated based on the file size in the archive area, but based on statistics of the message size in the database. The message size is the size of Data Files (*.DF), which doesn't include the Address Files (*.AF) used for storing message delivery information. IMSVA generates a DF and AF file pair for each message in the quarantine/archive area. Therefore, the actual used size in the area will include the size of both DF and AF files.

To resolve this issue, reduce the size of the Disk quota. For example, set it to 80% of the original quota:

  • For Quarantined Area, go to Mail Areas & Queues > Settings > Quarantine, then change the value of "Disk quota (per scanner service)". Save the changes.
  • For Archive Area, go to Mail Areas & Queues > Settings > Archive, then change the value of "Disk quota (per scanner service)". Save the changes.
