Best Practice Configuration for Spam prevention in Hosted Email Security (HES)

Be careful when adding a sender or domain under Approved Senders (Inbound Protection > Sender Filter > Approved Senders), as this will bypass all Spam checking.

Policy

To apply Best Practice for the Spam or Phish policy, perform the following steps:

  1. Go to Inbound Protection > Policy.
  2. Select your domain on the dropdown for "Policy for: " and click OK.
  3. Click the Spam or Phish Policy.

Depending on the amount of spam messages your organization is getting, it may be necessary to increase the spam detection level, enable social engineering attack and include advanced analysis to identify threats.

  1. Click Scanning Criteria.
  2. Check all boxes except Graymail, and set Spam check to a higher level (suggested: Moderately High). Graymails are covered by a different policy, “Newsletter or spam-like”:

Note that setting the spam check higher may lead to more false positives, but it can also reduce false negative messages and avoid malicious messages in. If Virtual Analyzer is enabled, HES performs observation and analysis on samples in a closed environment. Advanced analysis can delay the delivery of messages by 5 to 30 minutes.

 

  • Click Submit to save the changes.

 

IP Reputation Setting

Apply the settings below to apply best practice on IP Reputation filtering:

  1. Go to Inbound Protection > IP Reputation > Settings.
  2. Set the Aggressiveness of Dynamic IP Reputation Settings to 2.

  3. Enable all 3 IP Reputation checks (RBL, DUL, and ETL).
