The Server Tuner tool optimizes the performance of the OfficeScan server. It enables users to:

  1. Open Windows Explorer on the OfficeScan server.
  2. Open the ..\Program Files\Trend Micro\OfficeScan\PCCSRV\Admin\Utility \SvrTune folder.
  3. Double-click SvrTune.exe.
  4. Click OK. A prompt will appear asking you to restart the OfficeScan Master service.
  5. Click Yes to save the Server Tuner settings, and then restart the service.

The settings will take effect after the service is restarted.

You can also choose to click No to save the Server Tuner settings, but not restart the service. You will need to restart the OfficeScan Master service from the Services Applet or restart the OfficeScan server machine for the settings to take effect.

  • Timeout for client/agent - This specifies how long the OfficeScan server will wait for the client to acknowledge the update as successful.
  • Timeout for update agent - This specifies how long the OfficeScan server will wait for the Update Agent to acknowledge the update as successful.
  • Retry count - This specifies how many times the server will attempt to update a client.
  • Retry interval - This specifies how long the OfficeScan server will wait before checking the update queue.
  • Event buffer - This is used to report the client/agent status.
  • Log buffer - This is used to report the detected virus.

The Network traffic section defines the hours of the day that constitute the normal, off-peak, and peak hours in your network.

The Maximum Client Connections specify the number of clients/agents that the server will notify about the updates at one time. There are two (2) types of clients/agents:

  • Other update source: OfficeScan Server or Other update source (including ActiveUpdate Server, and internal update web pages)
  • OfficeScan server: Update agent

After the server notifies the clients/agents that updates are available, the clients/agents will attempt to update from their designated update sources. The number of clients/agents in the network and the network resources will determine the best Timeout for client setting.

The OfficeScan Server waits up to 30 minutes for each notified client/agent in a group to complete the update sequence. If a client cannot finish the update within the 30-minute time frame, the OfficeScan Server will notify the next client on queue. By default, a client attempts to download updates from the server up to five times at 15-minute intervals.

Below is an example of how the Server Tuner tool is used on 100 clients/agents. Depending on the working hours, 100 is the  default number of clients/agents that can be notified at a given time.

  1. The OfficeScan Server simultaneously notifies 100 clients/agents when there is a new component for downloading.
  2. Clients/Agents on queue reply to the OfficeScan server to confirm notification receipt and starts updating. The client is given 30 minutes timeout to download the component.

If there is no reply from the client after 15 minutes, the server will send another notification to confirm if the notification was received. It will continue to send follow-up notifications up to five times.

The client will be removed from the queue if there is no reply after the  fifth notification. The next client will be notified.

  3. The client confirms the successful update. If there is no update confirmation in 30 minutes, the OfficeScan Server will remove the client from the queue and will notify the next client. The server will also send notifications when one of the clients/agents confirms a successful update.

In large networks, small maximum connection settings, shorter timeouts, and fewer retries may update the clients/agents more quickly.

If a large number of clients/agents are reporting to the OfficeScan server, the size of the buffer may be increased. However, before increasing the buffer settings, verify if the OfficeScan server has enough memory to handle the new settings.

Under Network Traffic, specify the number of clients/agents the server will notify about the updates at a time.Since the Update Agents receive their updates before the clients/agents are notified, you need to set the Timeout for update agent setting with sufficient time.

The default setting of 10 minutes may require an increase if the network is very large.
