Managing Disk Usage Issues on TippingPoint TX-Series Due to Telemetry File Accumulation

Overview

Customers using Trend Micro TippingPoint TX-Series devices may experience situations where disk usage on the /user partition reaches unusually high levels, triggering Major state alerts. This condition is often caused by the accumulation of telemetry package files on the device’s disk, leading to critical operational alerts and potential service disruption.

Symptoms

  • Disk usage alert reporting Major state when disk usage exceeds 90%, often around 95%
  • Alerts specifically stating issues with /user disk usage
  • Device performance degradation or faults linked to disk space
  • Logs showing large numbers of telemetry package files consuming disk space

From the SMS client, Devices > select TPS > Events > System Health > Health Stats

From the TPS cli, run command show health storage.

Logs and Diagnostics

  • Technical Support Reports (TSRs) may reveal telemetry package files are using excessive storage
  • System logs indicate disk pressure or warnings related to disk space thresholds
  • Event logs may contain alerts for Major state due to disk space overutilization

Probable Causes

  • Telemetry package files generated by the system accumulate over time without automatic cleanup in certain firmware versions
  • Known issue present in TippingPoint TX-Series firmware version 6.4.0.13986 and similar older builds
  • Failure to upgrade device firmware allowing accumulation and disk usage growth

Remediation and Prevention Steps

Upgrade Firmware

  • Upgrade the TippingPoint TX-Series device to firmware version 6.4.1 or later (6.5 recommended) where this issue is resolved
  • Firmware upgrades patch the underlying issue and improve disk management for telemetry files

Manual Remediation

  • If immediate upgrade is not possible, contact Trend Micro Support for assistance
  • Support can guide on safely removing telemetry package files or clearing logs to free disk space
  • Manual file removal requires access to device shell and proper validation to avoid impacting device operation
