How do I upgrade the TOS software on my TPS/vTPS device?

Summary

You can download, import or automatically update versions of the TippingPoint Operating System (TOS) for distribution to your TippingPoint device via the Security Management System (SMS) or the Local Security Manager (LSM). Only users with Super User access can perform these operations. These procedures apply to the the following devices.

  • TPS
  • vTPS
  • Security Management System (SMS)

Notes

  • It is highly recommended that a "maintenance" window be scheduled for this procedure.
  • It is highly recommended that a snapshot/backup be created prior to upgrading the device.
  • It may be necessary to update a standalone IPS license if the update is not permitted do to an out of date license on the device.
  • For the latest information regarding compatibility issues between the SMS and the IPS TOS versions, as well as relevant changes refer to the appropriate Release Notes on the TMC (http://tmc.tippingpoint.com)website.

From the TPS/vTPS via the LSM

TPS/vTPS Step 1: Download TOS Software from TMC

  1. In a web browser, open https://tmc.tippingpoint.com. If you have not already done so, create a TMC account using your Customer ID and Serial Number.
  2. From the top menu bar on the TMC home page, click Releases -> Software -> TPS -> model number.
  3. Locate the package you want to download and perform one of the following actions:
    • Click View to review the information about the package and then click Download.
    • Click Download to download the package without reviewing the package information.
  4. Follow the download instructions for your specific browser.

Note: To avoid unexpected behavior do not change the name of this file.


TPS/vTPS Step 2: Install new TOS Software Update

Note: Prior to installing the new software, backup any custom filters you have created and implemented as the update will overwrite these files.

  1. From your web browser, login to the TPS/vTPS LSM
  2. If required, remove the TPS/vTPS from SMS control (System->SMS). Click "Unmanage")
  3. Create a snapshot of the TPS/vTPS (System->System Snapshots). Enter a snapshot name. Click Create Snapshot)
  4. Place the device in Layer-2 Fallback (System->HA)while the software update takes place.
  5. Install the TOS (System->System, DV, Licenses)
  6. Under "Software Versions" click "Install"
  7.  Click Browse to select the update package file that you downloaded from the Threat Management Center
  8. Click Install to install the software update (The TPS/vTPS will reboot as needed; this may take 5 to 10 minutes)
  9. If required, return TPS to SMS control (System->SMS). Click "Manage".

Note: When updating the TPS/vTPS software, the progress bar may be interrupted by a pop-up message window. If this occurs, you will need to monitor the update process using the system log. If the system log does not show any errors during the update process, the TPS/vTPS reboots when the update is complete. When the installation completes, the TPS/vTPS performs a soft reboot. After the reboot, you can log back in to the system.


From the SMS

In order to update the TOS software from the TPS/vTPS you have to download the software from the Threat management Center (TMC). You can do this either by having the SMS download the software or by downloading the software yourself. To get the TOS software, perform eithers SMS Step 1 or SMS Step 2 depending on you preference.

SMS Step 1: Download the TOS Software via the SMS

  1. Log in to the SMS from a client.
  2. On the SMS toolbar, navigate to the Devices->All Devices and expand the tab.
  3. Select the TippingPoint OS tab.
  4. Do one of the following:
    • Click Download From TMC.
    • Right-click the TOS Inventory screen and select the Download from TMC item.
    • On the top menu bar, select the File -> Download TOS from TMC item.
  5. The SMS contacts the TMC, checks the versions, and begins the download of any available updates for the TOS software.
  6. The file displays in the TOS Inventory section and is ready to be distributed.
  7. When completed proceed to SMS Step 3.

SMS Step 2: Import TOS Software from a File

  1. In a web browser, open https://tmc.tippingpoint.com. If you have not already done so, create a TMC account using your Customer ID and Serial Number.
  2. From the top menu bar on the TMC home page, click Releases -> Software -> model type -> model number.
  3. Locate the package you want to download and perform one of the following actions:
    • Click View to review the information about the package and then click Download.
    • Click Download to download the package without reviewing the package information.
  4. Follow the download instructions for your specific browser. Note: To avoid unexpected behavior on the SMS, do not change the name of this file.
  5. In the SMS Client, open the Devices -> TippingPoint TOS screen.
  6. Do one of the following:
    • Click Import.
    • Right-click theta's Inventory screen and select Import from the menu.
    • On the top menu bar, select the File -> Import-> Import TOS Software from File menu item.
  7. In the Choose File dialog, locate the downloaded file and click OK.
  8. After the file imports, the file displays in the TOS Inventory section and is ready to be distributed.
  9. When completed proceed to SMS Step 3.

SMS Step 3: Distribute the TOS

  1. In the TOS Inventory, select a TippingPoint OS entry.
  2. Do one of the following:
    • Click Distribute.
    • Right-click and select the Distribute menu item.
    • On the top menu bar, select the File -> Distribute TOS to Device menu item.
  3. From the "Targets" list, select the device to upgrade.
  4. Click OK to commence the distribution.
  5. The distribution process displays in the Distribution Progress section.
