How do I configure NMS/SNMP device settings from the SMS?

Summary
The settings for  NMS/SNMP Settings, including trap IP address, trap port, and community string. NMS is the protocol for monitoring the device by a restricted NMS, such as HP Open View. On the Device Configuration (NMS/SNMP Settings) screen, you can enable applications to monitor your IPS/TPS device. You can create new trap destination, edit or delete existing trap destination settings.

Note: The option to use SNMP v3 is available only when editing the configuration for an N/NX-Platform IPS system that is running TOS v3.2 or later. To use SNMP v3 for NMS traps, you must configure Services for SNMP v3 or Both.

 

How To: Common Task

  1. Log in to the SMS from a client.
  2. On the SMS toolbar, navigate to the Devices->All Devices and expand the tab.
  3. Select a device from the display window and do one of the following:
    • Right-click and select Edit->Device Configuration.
    • On the top menu select Edit->Details->Device Configuration.
    • Double-click the device and click on Device Configuration
  4. On the Device Configuration Wizard screen, click the NMS/SNMP Settings tab.
  5. Enter or edit a Community String (1-31 characters).
  6. Click New for a new configuration or select an existing listing and click Edit to change an existing configuration.
  7. The Create Trap Destination dialog displays.

 

How To: Configure NMS for SNMP v2

  1. Enter the IP Address and the Port (port 162 is the default port) for the trap settings.
  2. Click OK to return to the Device Configuration screen.
  3. Click OK to update the device.

 

How To: Configure NMS for SNMP v3

  1. Enter the IP Address and the Port (port 162 is the default port) for the trap settings.
  2. For the trap destination, select SNMP v3.
  3. Enter the Engine IDUser NamePassword and then Verify Password.
  4. Select the Privacy Protocol from the drop-down box.
  5. Click OK to return to the Device Configuration screen.
  6. Click OK to update the device.
