SNMP authentication between devices consists of nothing more than a password, which the system calls the “community string”. Port 162 is the default SNMP trap port. The SNMP/NMS Community String requirements are as follows:
The Community String must contain 1-31 characters. In addition, any of the following characters are permitted;
- English uppercase characters (A - Z)
- English lowercase characters (a - z)
- Base 10 digits (0 - 9)
The following special characters are allowed;
- @ # % ^ * ( ) - _ + = { } [ ] | : ; , !
The following special characters are NOT allowed;
- / ` ' & \ < > ? " $
- Carriage returns (ASCII 13)
- Line feeds (ASCII 10)
